Scopes Trial Fun Facts

Last Updated 3/8/2025

The Scopes Trial ended as many people forecast and both prosecution and defense desired…with a guilty verdict even though Scopes privately could not recollect if he had actually taught macro evolution in the class he taught as a substitute. Judge John T. Raulston set the fine at $100, and many people volunteered to pay the fine, including the ACLU, Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan.
